Sand Casting Design Considerations
- Aluminum sand casting design utilizes a 3-2-1 datum point convention for primary, secondary, and tertiary
datums. Use cast radii or diameters for datums as required by part
or feature function.
- Avoid locating on or near parting lines and gating.
- Locate all datum
points on the same side of the parting line.
- Allow for draft when
dimensioning and defining processing requirements.
- Clearly identify
and dimension all datum points on the part drawing for aluminum sand casting. Cast and machined
datums may be required, depending upon part function of the aluminum sand casting design.
